Kiwi the fast-talking adventurous bird found, shaken but okay

He’s a little flustered and hoarse. But Kiwi the much-loved parakeet is back home after a five-day adventure in the wild.

Kiwi, who is very talkative, friendly and tame, ran in to trouble after flying away last week. Thankfully, the Indian ring-neck was reunited with Coes Creek owner Chelsea Hancock with lots of appreciative kisses after finding refuge from butcher birds with a family in Little Mountain, 21km away.

One can only imagine the fast talking Kiwi must have done to keep those butcher birds at bay!

Dad Jason Hancock thanked everyone who helped keep an eye out.

“An even bigger thank you to Drew and his beautiful family for calling us up when our exhausted Kiwi walked into their kitchen,” Jason said. “These lovely people are also bird lovers and they were sitting in their lounge room when they noticed butcher birds around and then saw Kiwi on their veranda. So they opened the kitchen windows and he wandered in.

“They gave him seed and water — which he had heaps of — and didn’t stop for a while. When he finished he proceeded to their fruit bowl to eat the apples.

“His feathers are a bit ruffled and voice crackled but he still managed to give Chelsea kisses. End result, big adventure and we are all happy.

“He is a very loved family pet, especially to my daughter, as it was her Christmas gift a few years back as a baby. We can still see him getting cranky that he cannot say what he wants correctly. But he has calmed down so much. Mostly because of Chelsea putting in the time and effort. We all are, but their connection is unbreakable. He is so connected to her and we could see that calming effect.”

Jason wanted to thank the Living in Nambour Facebook group for getting the word out about their precious pet, for which they offered a $500 reward.
