Mapleton art auction set to inspire community creativity

A painting by indigenous artist, Minnie Pwerle

Mapleton Art members are hosting an innovative auction at the Mapleton Library Community Centre on Saturday, 5 April 2025. The event, designed for both sellers and buyers—or anyone looking for an afternoon with a difference—begins with viewing at 2.30pm followed by the auction at 3.30pm.

The auction welcomes a wide range of artworks, including three-dimensional objects. However, it is intended for established artists rather than hobbyists. Artworks must be submitted by 20 February, with online bidding commencing in March 2025.

Participants will have several options to bid. There will be online pre-sale offers and live bidding available, or art enthusiasts can view and bid in person on the day. A commission will be taken from each sale, with funds raised supporting community projects such as a new mural or sculpture for the ‘Art in Public Places’ initiative in Mapleton.

Among the works already offered are a unique wool painting by Barbara Geisel, which has received international acclaim, and four pieces by Dieuwie Holthuysen, a Dutch artist who painted in South Africa. There will also be a number of acclaimed indigenous works, including pieces by Minne Pwerle.

• The auction also presents an opportunity for those looking to declutter or downsize to consign their art. For enquiries, please contact mapletonlibrary@gmail.com, and further details will be provided.
