A lifetime fascination with beauty and harmony has provided inspiration for Woombye artist, David Rhys.

“Although my work is actually quite technical, it is all ultimately created in the pursuit of the pure truth of beauty.”

London-born David emigrated to Australia  in the 60s in response to an ad in the newspaper calling for young people to make the move.

“One minute I was reading an ad in the paper and it seemed like the next, I was on a plane heading for Sydney,” he laughed.

David and his son moved to Woombye five years ago and have settled into life there with ease. David has spent his life studying in an attempt to better understand the mechanics of beauty and has turned his hand to every medium from sculpting, to pastels, oil, acrylic and watercolour painting.

“I have always been fascinated by phenomena such as the Fibonacci sequence and I get very involved in the technical aspects of producing art,” David said. “But at the end of the day, I create art for the pure joy of it.

“It is my own way of investigating the creative and metaphysical world and I think it could be best described as a deeply personal form of worship”.

Describing himself as an Australian Pop Expressionist, David has drawn inspiration from nature, the music and entertainment industry, history and science including Quantum Mechanics.

“My house is basically overflowing with my work as I love to surround myself with colour and beauty” David said. “but, of course, I would like my work to be enjoyed by others and my pieces are always looking for a home where they can bring the same joy with which they were created”.
