Nambour’s Lind Lane has a real treat in store for lovers of theatre in September. Twelfth Night was written late in Shakespeare’s career, when he was at the height of his experience and ability as a dramatist. It is a romantic comedy; a comedy of errors and misunderstandings; and filled with plotting of various characters bent on revenge.

Although Twelfth Night takes place long ago in the country of Illyria, the Lind’s production takes inspiration from the 1980s in its production design, and this is reflected in the costumes and music. “Where it has been necessary to rewrite parts of the play to make it more understandable by modern audiences, the modified dialogue is in Iambic Pentameter,” says director, Joy Hinckley, “So it remains true to the author’s flavour and intent.”

Twelfth Night tells the story of Viola and Sebastian, twins who are separated by a shipwreck during a great storm at sea. Barely surviving, and each believing that the other has drowned; they make their ways to Illyria where they start to make new lives. Viola, impersonating a man and calling herself Cesario, finds a place in the house of the lovestruck Duke Orsino, who is unsuccessfully courting the Countess Olivia. Both nobles find this young man strangely attractive to them, and Cesario is unwillingly caught up in hilariously inept intrigues by members of the households.

You can join in the fun at Nambour’s Lind Lane Theatre in leafy Mitchell St, from Friday September 15 until Saturday September 23. Go to www.lindlane.com.au/whats-on or phone 1300 732 764.

And “Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?” Fear not, as the Lind has a fully stocked bar, and snacks also available.
