After months of setbacks and uncertainty, Walter’s Artisan Bakery is set to open its doors on Currie Street, Nambour, this Friday, November 1. The bakery faced a major challenge when power supply issues threatened to derail the much-anticipated opening. Thanks to the intervention of local politicians and the quick work of Energex, the bakery is now ready to welcome customers, said owner David Mares.

Previously located at the Big Pineapple, has invested $800,000 in its new Nambour location, overcoming obstacles that seemed insurmountable just months ago. Mr Mares credits local politicians Buderim MP Brent Mickelberg and re-elected Nicklin MP Marty Hunt for escalating the issue, leading to Energex fast-tracking the necessary upgrades.

“I must say it was up to the two politicians, Brent Mickelberg and Marty Hunt,” Mr Mares said. “They took it up to Parliament, questioned the Minister on it, and things started moving with Energex. Once Energex engaged, they were fantastic.”

Mr Mares emphasised the importance of the community to the bakery’s success and his desire to be part of Nambour’s main street. “It’s important to have that community come with me to get this done. People like our product, and more people are now going to see our product,” he said.

The new location includes a public-facing shopfront, allowing customers to enjoy experimental breads and pastries unavailable to wholesalers.

Walter’s Artisan Bakery will offer an array of freshly baked goods, including their renowned croissants made with 82% butter. “We don’t use margarine because the taste just isn’t right. What we make is pure,” Mr Mares said, promising a delightful selection for Friday’s opening.

Mr Mares is optimistic about the bakery’s future in Nambour and the impact it will have on the town. “This is a beautiful location between the Coast and the hinterland. I know a lot of our clients come from up in the hinterland, and they’ll come down here. They’re not just going to come to our place; they’re going to shop in Nambour,” he said. He hopes the bakery will contribute to Nambour coming alive, drawing people from across the region.

• The shop is at 131 Currie Street Nambour and will officially open  on Friday, November 1, bringing a slice of artisan excellence to the heart of town.
