Vale Christine Thorogood

The funeral of Christine Thorogood was held at Gregson and Weight Nambour on Monday. Christine was born on October 20 1947 in Jandowae near Toowoomba to Ruby and Ben Hickey. She was the youngest of five children. Christine moved to Toowoomba when she was 7 due to her father’s work. When Christine was 10 years old, she lost her beloved father suddenly.

She finished school and started an apprenticeship, hairdressing for Morrisons Salons.

After she finished her hairdressing apprenticeship Christine went to Nambour to work in a salon.

On a fateful night at the Club Hotel Christine met Noel Thorogood. Romance blossomed and they were married on the 13th of February 1971 in Toowoomba.

Christine not only married into the Thorogood family, but she “became a Thorogood” and really loved being part of the family.

Christine and Noel had three lovely daughters, Renae, Leisel and Sharna. She continued hairdressing in Mooloolaba and then in Yandina.

Christine enjoyed sports, including tennis and darts, and later in life with Noel’s persuasion, lawn bowls. She loved everything about lawn bowls and would not only play but volunteered to work and provide in the kitchen.

It became like a second home to her. She worked in the kitchen on Friday nights and later became president of the Ladies Bowling Club which she enjoyed.

Last week the Yandina Bowls Club named their kitchen, The Christine Thorogood Memorial Kitchen. What a huge honor for her.

Christine had eight grandchildren, Joshua, Jordan, Sam, Keira, Eva, James, Allegra and Austin. She loved being a grandmother. A favourite place to take the kids was up to Hervey Bay.

Through lawn bowls and hairdressing, she met many wonderful friends.

Christine lost Noel in 1999 which was devasting to her.

She was also a wonderful cook and loved gardening. If you ever needed to know what was happening in Yandina, Christine was the lady to go to. She was always helping other people throughout her life and in her time of need people have been there for her.

When Christine was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019, she put up a good fight before finally succumbing.

Surrounded by family and friends to the very end, she would take comfort in knowing so many people cared about her. It’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our life that matters. A life of wonderful memories to the very end, not only for us, but for her as well.

Rest in Peace Christine.
