TMR launches campaign to reduce bridge strikes

The Palmwoods rail bridge, often hit by trucks, is once again in the spotlight as the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) rolls out a state-wide safety campaign aimed at reducing the rising number of bridge strikes across Queensland.

The "Truckload of Trouble" campaign is designed to increase driver awareness of vehicle heights and highlight the risks associated with low clearance bridges.

In the 2023/24 financial year, Queensland recorded 369 rail bridge or protection beam strikes, with an average of one incident per day. The Palmwoods bridge has been the site of several strikes, contributing to local disruptions and posing risks to road users.

These incidents, which are often preventable, not only delay rail services but also come with heavy penalties for drivers. Motorists who strike rail infrastructure face fines starting at $1,290, while more serious cases could lead to penalties of up to $12,904 if the matter goes to court.

Gary Mahon, CEO of the Queensland Trucking Association, emphasized the need for drivers to plan their routes carefully. "Truck drivers need to know their vehicle height and be prepared to avoid low clearance bridges. It’s all about awareness and planning," he said.

Palmwoods underpass is regularly struck by oversized trucks.
