On the last Friday of each month, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS), The Shack in Nambour, Regal Paws Pet Grooming, and a group of dedicated volunteers band together to support people in need by pampering their four legged companions.

“This initiative is something that we at SCARS are incredibly proud to be part of,” said SCARS board member and volunteer Sharon Hopkins. “We were looking for ways that we could actively branch out into the community, and perhaps help prevent people in tough circumstances from having to surrender their beloved pets.”

With an awareness of the work being undertaken at The Shack in Nambour, SCARS saw an opportunity to positively contribute by assisting those who are homeless or in very challenging situations to care for their animals.

“The experience has been eye opening and always good for the soul,” said Ms Hopkins. “We are in awe of the work being done by Pastor Dale and his wife Donna, and their volunteers. One of the first lessons has been to drop the judgement around people who find themselves in need of the services at The Shack. We have met people from all walks of life, and it is very leveling to hear their stories.

“What immediately struck us was the love and devotion these people have for their dogs. For some, their dog is their only family, and is incredibly precious to them.

“We gather together at The Shack and encourage clients to bring along their pooches for some well-deserved pampering,” she said. “Every dog enjoys a warm flea bath from Laura, while their owner has breakfast.”

“I started my mobile pet grooming business 12 months ago and I was looking for a way that I could make a positive contribution to our community,” said Regal Paws’ owner, Laura Weston.

“It is wonderful to be part of this event each month and to be able to help people for whom their dog is their whole world. At the end of the day, we all share a love of dogs.”

Twenty year old Laura is also studying dog psychology and training.

“Laura is just amazing with the dogs,” Ms Hopkins said. “She has such a wonderful, kind way, and both the dogs and their owners are very comfortable with her.”

The entire initiative is only possible due to the incredible support shown to SCARS by the public, and local businesses.

“We could not operate as we do without this support,” Ms Hopkins explained. “Most of our activities are dependent on donations. As a part of this initiative, we are able to take along pet food, warm dog coats, blankets, leads, collars and toys. Our SCARS volunteers make the most beautiful fabric, take home bags and we fill them with goodies, as well as things like collapsible water bowls, poo pick up bags and packets of dog treats.

“The best way people can participate is to donate items such as wet and dry pet food, collars, leads, blankets and even worm, flea and tick medication to SCARS. At the moment, shops like K-Mart have nice warm dog coats from $12, so it is very easy to make a big difference.

“It is an exciting journey to be on with Pastor Dale and we are looking forward to the next dog wash day on Friday the 23rd of July at The Shack.”
