‘Sparrows of Kabul’ brings Afghan stories to hinterland

Fred Smith, renowned for his storytelling of Australia’s military involvement in Afghanistan, will bring his latest stage show, “Sparrows of Kabul,” to South East Queensland this Month. The tour, commemorating the third anniversary of the fall of Kabul, features Smith’s poignant song cycle that captures the essence of Australia’s experience in Afghanistan.

“Sparrows of Kabul” has been hailed as “a beautiful retelling” and “utterly beguiling.” Smith, who also authored a book and released an album of the same name, draws on his firsthand experiences at Kabul International Airport during the 2021 evacuation.

“Seeing the desperation with my own eyes struck me to the core,” Smith said, reflecting on his time assisting in the evacuation efforts. His songs and narratives from this period are woven into the show, offering a vivid account of the events and their impact.

The tour, supported by the Queensland Government and local arts funding, will visit Maleny, Pomona, Coolum, and Eudlo from August 17-25, 2024.
