Drivers from the first Yandina Speedway race meeting, some aged in their 80s, gathered with younger generations to celebrate a 50-Year Reunion on Sunday August 16.

Organiser Debbie Collier said all involved enjoyed the experience and the reunion at the School of Arts Hall was very successful.

“The memories flowed of driving skills, antics, friendships, triumphs, stories of the days past and tales of the 50 years since the first race meeting,” Debbie said.

Debbie said people enjoyed video footage from the early race days. “It was absolutely wonderful for me to witness the animated responses of people as they watched the videos.”

People were greeted by the welcoming voice of Val McIntyre on footage of racing from 1970. “Val was heavily involved in club activities, from fund raising to lap recording and time keeping,” said Debbie.

Memorabilia of photos and Eileen Diefenback’s poetry about drivers and speedway life adorned the walls. Old programs and Videos of early Yandina Speedway footage featured.

The Commemorative lap around the old track watched by spectators was a fitting end to the day.

The videos can be viewed at Yandina Historic House.
