NYU Football girls try their hand at barefoot bowls

It was about as far from the strenuous activity of football as you can get, but that was kind of the point.

About forty girls and ladies from the Nambour Yandina United Football Club visited the Yandina Bowls Club last Saturday for a barefoot bowls bonding function and lunch.

Bowls Club president Leon Granzien said he was thrilled to host the players.

“They were hoping the barefoot bowling session will be a way for the soccer girls to be inspired to go on to become soccer playing women,” he said.

“It’s also a great example of locals supporting locals.”

Nambour Yandina United has junior girls teams from under 10s to under 16s all coached by senior women players.

Premier Women’s Coach Matt Croskerry said the team-building excercise was aimed at establishing bonds between the teams and across age groups and encourage girls to stay at the club.

“It’s a way to get away from the intensity of the training environment and relax and enjoy each other’s company,” he said.

The Bowls Club also recently hosted the Cricket Club awards night.

“We had a 109 people here,” said Leon. “And we love promoting bowls you never know there may be some budding bowlers among the crew. It’s a community sports complex so it’s nice to be social.”
