Selangor Private Hospital, providing first class medical care for 70 years

From L-R Executive Assistant, Nicole Wilson, CEO Karl Van Der Mewe and Director of Clinical Services, Emma Dagan

For 70 years, Nambour Selangor Private Hospital has provided high-quality medical care and support to Sunshine Coast patients and their families. According to CEO Dr Karl Van Der Merwe, the longevity and success of the hospital can be attributed to Selangor's ability to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of modern medical care and, more importantly, to the patient-centric focus of the care provided.

“Our commitment to patient care is well reflected by our industry-leading NPS (Net Promoter Score),” he said.

“It consistently sits above 80, which is not only high for our industry but across industries. There are four basic metrics that we focus on at Nambour Selangor to provide the best possible care we can: patient safety, patient satisfaction, staff engagement, and financial viability. We focus on the first three, and financial viability follows.”

The hospital is nestled in a quiet, leafy area in central Nambour that is easily accessible and has plenty of free parking.

“What our patients love about Nambour Selangor is its relaxed, homely, family feel. We see ourselves as a community hospital, and this is the feeling that patients get when being treated here,” Dr. Van Der Merwe said.

Currently, Selangor employs 250 staff members, 25% of whom have worked at the hospital for more than ten years.

“Our longest-serving staff member has been here for 34 years, and I believe this says a lot about the culture at Nambour Selangor and the teams and relationships that staff have built over the years.”

In the past 12 months, the 76-bed hospital has helped patients on more than 10,000 occasions.

“We are particularly well-regarded for our rehabilitation services, where we aim to achieve fantastic patient outcomes,” he said.

Selangor provides a broad range of day and overnight surgery procedures, from eyes and pain management procedures to urology and other general surgeries. It has also become well-known for its caring, sensitive, and supportive palliative end-of-life care.

“There are options for the community to become involved with our Selangor team through volunteering,” said Dr. Van Der Merwe. “Our patients and staff love having the volunteers around, and we know that the volunteers get a lot out of the experience, too.”

“The best place to find out more about what we offer is via our website,” he said.
