Gritty defensive effort the key to second placed Crusher’s win

Nambour Crushers are in second place on the SCGRL ladder after a gritty come-from-behind win against Kawana at Kawana in windy conditions on Saturday night.

The Crushers laid the foundations for the win around a high-energy defensive effort. They did well to keep the Dolphins to only six points in the first half, considering the wind, and came from 6-nil behind on the back of a solid kicking game, to claim the game with two tries in the second stanza.

Winger Jack Williams-Sproat crossed for the first before Lachlan Short crossed with only four minutes remaining.

“We knew coming down here to Kawana that it was going to be a tough game,” said Crushers captain Kevin Campbell.

“But that was a great game for us. Our boys really put in the effort. We were up against a really strong wind in that first half.”

Campbell said the team’s ball security needed improving but there was no doubting the effort and physicality and mobility in defence.

“That’s a big issue that we’ve been working on and despite dropping a few too many balls I think we probably did our best effort for the full 80 minutes. I’m really proud of how the boys reacted. The last couple of months we’ve been working on effort. Just putting in for the boys. Our attitude has to be to just keep turning up.”

The win was even more gratifying considering the Crushers were without experienced prop Marty Cordwell who has a torn bicep.  The Crushers next games are against third-placed Coolum at Crushers Park at 6pm on May 6 before playing last-placed Noosa, away, at 6pm May 13.
