Do you love to chat? Seeking volunteers for Visitor Centres

Cathy Daveson has been volunteering in the Visitor Information Centres (VIC’s) for nine years and believes the Centres are the best way to help visitors find out about the Hinterland.

“Today, we have been chatting with a couple travelling around in a little van from Brazil,” Cathy said. “Regardless of age, people still want to have a chat with someone face-to-face and find out where to stay and what to do. And absolutely everybody wants a hard copy map.”

Dianne Brewer volunteers at the Montville VIC, was born in Nambour and loves meeting different people from all over the world who pop in for information.

“Growing up in the region, I know quite a bit and can share the tips but to stay updated, I’ve had to get out and about to discover new things in our own backyard.

“The top thing people want to know about at the Montville Centre is info about our wonderful walks and waterfalls,” she says.

Elaine Wells is also a born and bred local and her must-visit attractions are Kondalilla Falls and Mary Cairncross Reserve. She jokes, “my kids say I’m doing a job I love as I can tell people where to go and get away with it!”

Visit Sunshine Coast Industry and Trade Coordinator Beth Mahoney said they are seeking more volunteers to help out at the Montville and Glass House Mountain Visitor Information Centres.

“We are always looking for enthusiastic people who love to have a chat. Local knowledge is handy, but not essential. Training and a uniform are provided with shifts typically for half a day and available 7 days.

“One of the best perks of the role is the familiarisation training program we run that gets the volunteers out and about and seeing and meeting the businesses and seeing behind the scenes. There is no better way to experience it first-hand, so they can talk about it to visitors.”
