Frustrated rural firies seek help

A hot and dry summer is expected with some predictions it could be the deadliest bushfire season in years and  West Woombye Fire Brigade is working hard to prepare for bushfires in the area. However the brigade is frustrated with the process and length of time it is taking council to grant permission to erect signage to inform and protect residents in West Woombye.  West Woombye Fire Brigade, Secretary Mr John Woods said the brigade organised new signs to place around the area to communicate the current fire danger as well contact details for the fire warden, "We have never had to ask for permission to put signs up in the past but the new rules require us to," Mr Woods said. "I contacted council and was told we can't put a sign up on council land . It is so important that we keep residents in isolated rural areas informed of the fire danger."Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said she will do all she can to get the approval, "I am well aware the West Woombye need to have these signs up and we will take the matter into serious consideration," Cr McKay said. West Woombye Fire Brigade Training Officer Mr Campbell Young said it seems crazy how council can make a quick decision to consider changing the town plan for an international developer, "But approving a sign to keep residents safe is another story, it just doesn't make sense" Mr Young said. "We have no idea how long it will take to get approval, the rural fire service is an essential service so we hope to get an answer sooner rather than later."A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said, "Sunshine Coast Council is aware that the West Woombye Rural Fire Brigade are seeking to install a permanent sign at their premises. Council’s planning officers are assisting the Brigade with the lodgement of their application."The quickest and safest option is to find a suitable private landholder along Blackall Range Road in West Woombye willing to put the sign on their property.
