Daniel Morcombe Foundation marks 20 years of child safety
The Daniel Morcombe Foundation has launched its 20th year, celebrating two decades of child safety advocacy. The milestone was marked with a special event at Parliament House, where Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a $2 million funding commitment.
“We are proud to be Daniel’s parents and quite moved that 20 years after his abduction, those tragic events are not forgotten and his important legacy continues to grow,” said Bruce Morcombe. Bruce and Denise Morcombe arrived in Canberra during their 21-day, 7500km Time To Talk Road Trip, aimed at educating regional primary school students about personal safety.
“Everything we do is to respectfully honour Daniel and to help keep children safe from harm and abuse,” Denise Morcombe added.
The Federal Government’s contribution will aid in developing essential educational resources. “Your Foundation inspires, it educates, and it helps make Australia a better and safer place. Above all, your work represents a lasting expression of profound love for your son,” said Mr Albanese during Question Time.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also praised the Foundation’s work in protecting children from online threats like grooming. “From the way that they have dedicated themselves since then - going to schools, doing online talks, engaging with other NGOs - there are countless lives of young Australian children that they’ve saved. And that’s something that we should acknowledge today,” Mr Dutton stated.
Upcoming milestone events over the next 12 months include the 20th Day and Walk for Daniel, the 20th Dance for Daniel, and a lunch for Daniel, celebrating the Foundation’s 20th birthday in May 2025.
The Daniel Morcombe Foundation continues to honor Daniel’s legacy by promoting child safety across Australia.
