So, you think you can’t dance? This class might just change your tune

Instructor Philippa Johnson’s Dance for Joy classes start with chair dancing to improve mobility.

Exercise and health are on the top of many people’s new year resolution lists, but mobility issues may seem a deterrent.

Not so for participants in the Yandina Dance for Joy classes who have started this year with enthusiasm and gusto.

Members of the group are focusing on improving their health with regular dance-based exercise.

Whatever the concern, be it knee/hip replacement, arthritis, a chronic condition such as Parkinsons — or feeling the effects of the ageing process, Dance for Joy offers a specific program which takes these factors into account.

“The program caters specifically for people with mobility issues, offering a program approved by doctors as well as occupational therapists and physiotherapists,” said instructor Philippa Johnson.

Phillippa said classes began with chair dancing with sequences ranging from sun salutation to Irish tap-dance.

“They then progress to standing stretches and follow up with slow circle dances or some salsa. A variety of music styles means something for everyone.

“The pace is determined by the group.

“Dancers experience increased mobility and improved coordination.”

Anne joined the group only last year. “I feel so much more confident now,” she said.

Phillippa said the secret was good exercise, good music and good company.

“It’s a friendly group and newcomers are welcome.  No partner and no experience is needed.”

Dance for Joy classes are held weekly at the Freemason Hall, North St. Yandina and run every Thursday morning. More details from Philippa 0417 780 016.
