Overseas travel is not on the cards any time soon but if a taste of France is what you are after, head to A Fig in the Sun at Burnside.

“Everything on our menu is made by us except for our croissants, which are flown in from Paris,” said owner Lisa Wiedrich.

“I buy the pastries raw and frozen, and bake them off fresh every day. They are made with French butter and European flour, which is less processed,” she said. “They are buttery, flaky and divine, just as croissants should be!”

A Fig in the Sun (formerly Sweet Corn Cafe), is a 30 year old dream come true for Lisa, who worked as a Chef in Melbourne back in the 90’s.

“I have also had a career in Medical Nutrition which furthered my passion for real food, quality produce and home cooking,” said Lisa. “I had been eyeing off this shop for about two years, thinking it would be perfect for a home cooked food cafe. It was so exciting when it became available and I have worked hard to put my own stamp on it and make it a relaxing, warm and inviting place to enjoy our food.”

The menu at A Fig in the Sun changes daily. The mouthwatering selection of dishes showcases outstanding fresh local produce, all meticulously prepared with passion. The flavours of the world are well represented in savoury dishes as well as off the charts home-baked sweet treats.

“I use either organic or European flour in my baking because they are less processed, and seem to be much better digested by those with gluten or grain intolerances,” said Lisa.

“I am a bit of a coffee snob, and I use a carefully selected blend of Kai coffee, which is roasted right here on the Sunny Coast. Not only do they supply incredible coffee, but Kai Coffee also supports children in Uganda and is part of an organisation which serves 10,000 meals to children every month. Being able to support a company like Kai Coffee is really important to me,” she said.

Lisa is expanding her range of health teas and other local products, which are available for retail purchase as well.
