Bloomhill Op Shops put out urgent call for volunteers as Christmas rush approaches

Nambour Op Shop Manager Lyn Mills is looking for volunteers ... "Just give us a ring or drop in if you’re interested.”

One of the region’s most respected charities is urgently seeking volunteer at its op shops, as the effects of Covid-19 restrictions continue to be felt across the hinterland.

Bloomhill Cancer Care provides personalised support to those touched by cancer, and lockdowns earlier this year brought a slump in sales as shops had to close.

Volunteer numbers have also dropped, causing concerns for the upcoming Christmas sales period, the most important time of the year for the retail sector including charity fundraising op shops.

Portia Curnow is Manager of Bloomhill Cancer Care Maleny Op Shop, and says the store urgently needs volunteers who can work Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Bloomhill’s Nambour store is also seeking volunteer help on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Maleny op shop is Bloomhill’s only secondhand store that’s open seven days a week.

“Everyone who works here loves it, I personally enjoy the social aspect so much but also knowing all the funds we raise go toward supporting people with cancer,” Portia said.

“Unfortunately a lot of people have been affected by cancer. Being creative with our donations and giving items a second lease of life is really fun. Maleny has terrific support from the community, and we are forever grateful for their donations of high quality goods, jewellery and for the money they give to Bloomhill. Every cent counts.”

Nambour Op Shop Manager Lyn Mills said volunteers enjoyed working with each other and doing important work together.

“You can do pricing, counter work, ironing, sorting,” she said. “You don’t need to do a full day, we just need people to do what works for them. Just give us a ring or drop in if you’re interested.”
