Business Writeup: Acting Up! Youth Theatre Academy

After operating in Woombye for 15 successful years, Acting Up! Youth Theatre Academy has expanded classes to children in Montville and Bli Bli.

Acting Up! has grown exponentially over the years and branched out in ways that even we would not have imagined possible,” said founding director Naomi Clasohm. “We started out running drama classes after school from the Drama room at Suncoast Christian College, and it just grew very organically from there”.

Naomi and her husband Andrew bring their formidable skills and experience in the dramatic arts to their students.

“My background is in acting - both on stage and in film, directing, writing and teaching, and Andrew is a professional photographer, videographer and camera teacher,” Naomi explained. “Our combined skill sets allow us to offer our students a unique breadth and depth of experience. We can take them through virtually every process involved in the performing arts and our students range from those who want to have fun with drama to those who are interested in pursuing the dramatic arts as a potential career”.

This year, Acting Up! has expanded classes to a new audience in Montville of five- to 18-year-olds.

“We decided to branch out to Montville and Bli Bli and have a new appeal to homeschooling families, as we can run classes during school hours as well,” Naomi said.

“We identified locations that are on the bus runs, and this enables students to come straight from school to us. This hasn’t always been an option for many families on the Range but now, it really is a wonderful alternative to after school care. Working parents no longer need to feel guilty that their children are missing out on this kind of opportunity”.

Naomi has engaged Deb Johnson and Savanah Murphy to teach the Montville classes.

“We are so excited to have such experienced teachers of this calibre,” Naomi said. “Both women are fully qualified primary teachers and are exceptionally gifted performers in dance, drama, musical theatre and singing, in their own right. As an added bonus, our students love them! They both have such an obvious passion for teaching”.
