Young heavy rockers ready to fly

Caption: Daniel Beddoe and brothers Evan and Lloyd Steer form the Nambour-based rock band LED Angels.By Richard BruinsmaA trio of young Nambour rockers are hoping they are on the verge of big things with their garage band LED Angels.The band members, brothers Evan and Lloyd Steer and their good friend Daniel Beddoe, have played around 70 gigs over the past three years, many of them unpaid but designed to generate valuable experience in performing live.Lead singer and guitarist Evan is 20, drummer Lloyd is 17, and bass player Daniel is 18. The trio met as students at Nambour High School, where they discovered their shared love of music – particularly hard rock.“We liked to play music and to do that you need a band, we wanted the fatness, so we have the drum happening, the bass happening and it just stuck, and we make music,” Evan said.Their band name in part comes from the first initial of each of their first names. They describe their music as hard rock and released their first studio single, “18”, on Australia Day.The song can be found on the new music website  www.bandcamp.com  or directly at https://ledangels.bandcamp.com/track/18They’re also on Facebook at “Led Angels”.LED Angels started out playing covers but now have a full slate of original songs.Evan and Lloyd’s mother, Catherine, is their manager. She realised the talent of the boys several years ago when they heard them play the Black Sabbath song, Paranoid, which was one of her favourites growing up.“When I heard them play, I knew they had something, so I said if they wanted to be in a band, they need to know what it’s like,” Mrs Steer said.“I forced them to play any venue – no matter how crappy – so they would learn to play anywhere.”Up until now, they’ve been restricted to under-18 gigs – like schools, fairs, charity events, festivals and markets - but with Lloyd to turn 18 in coming months, they hope to branch out into adult venues as well and tour Indonesia and the UK in coming years.The band members are all mindful of having a good education as a backup - Evan is studying a Bachelor of Science and Business, Daniel has IT qualifications and is looking for work, and Lloyd, who finished Year 12 last year, is enrolled to start a Bachelor of International Business this year. With that in mind, Daniel is level-headed about the band’s priorities - and when they'll push for a permanent place on the music scene. “Once we’re all finished Uni and have done what our mothers want, we might do it,” he said with a smile.
