Woombye Scouts celebrated 100 years since its formation on Saturday (October 22) making it one of only eight scout troops in Queensland to reach the century milestone.

The Woombye Community & Business Association (WCBA) was on hand to donate $100 to the Scout Group. “Woombye Scouts have a wonderful connection to Woombye and the surrounding district,” said Vice President Grant Palethorpe. “Reaching 100 years is an amazing achievement. The WCBA is pleased to be in a financial position where we can support our local community groups and sporting clubs.”

An Open Day with Scouting activities organised by Assistant Scout Leader Georgia Frost and a display of historical photographs and memorabilia was organised by long time Woombye scouts Marion and William ‘Bill’ Haselden.

The Woombye scout group meets on a Monday night from 6pm to 8pm, ages 11 – 14.5, with cubs from 5:30 – 7pm on Mondays (ages 8-11). Scouts is an amazing organisation for all young people, teaching them skills they will use for life and giving them experiences like no other.

As a scout I have been to Sydney for a 12-day camp with scouts from all over Australia, been on 30km hikes from Carnarvon Gorge to Mount Tamborine. Next year we have 11 scouts going to Switzerland for their 100 years of scouting in the Swiss Alps. Scouting provides young Australians, of all ages, gender and ability, with challenging and adventurous opportunities so they may grow and develop in the five areas of personal growth outlined in the Purpose of Scouting.
