Jayda on mission to empower women via boxing lessons

Jayda Glazebrook: “Basically, (boxing) saved my life ... it’s something that continues to help me in my whole life.”

Jayda Glazebrook credits boxing with getting her life on track. Now she wants to give other women the same chance.

The boxer and personal trainer plans to offer boxing classes for women from the OneHeart gym in Nambour’s C Square.

Jayda said she was particularly interested in working with women who needed to boost their confidence. “I want to help females realise their real strength and allow their full potential to show. Often, they just need some guidance,” she said.

Jayda, 20, got into boxing at 13 when, through a sibling, she ended up at OneHeart to learn self-defence with Charlie Wetere. She said boxing had helped her build confidence during her teenage years. “I’ve been doing it six-and-a-half, seven years and I’ve never looked back. Basically, it saved my life and it’s something I’ve carried with me and it’s something that continues to help me in my whole life,” she said. “That’s why I’m so passionate about being able to help others – give them that help I’ve got.”

Jayda said boxing taught mental and physical strength. “Some people need the physical strength to feel the mental strength and some people need the mental strength for the physical strength. It’s finding that balance.

“It’s very mentally tough but when you become mentally strong you carry that into your physical boxing.”

Jayda said boxing could be challenging but that was also why it was empowering.

“It can be quite confronting when you’re being pushed to your limits but if you’ve got the right person there, it makes all the difference,” she said.

“That’s what I aspire to be for other people.”

• She is looking at starting the classes, which will cost $10, on Wednesday and Friday mornings in September or October, pending interest. Phone 0428 804 812 for information.
