WCBA celebrates 2024 successes, calls for volunteers
By Cameron Outridge
The Woombye Community and Business Association (WCBA) president Milo Frawley reflected on a successful 2024 during his annual review, delivered at the WCBA Christmas Party at Sunshine & Sons Distillery on Tuesday night, December 10. He highlighted major accomplishments and issued an appeal for more volunteers to sustain the group’s momentum.
Speaking to members, Mr Frawley acknowledged the legacy of service by previous presidents like Les Hadlow (2006-2009) and stressed the ongoing need for community involvement.
“Our achievements are the result of collective effort, but we need more hands on deck to maintain this level of success,” Mr Frawley said. “Volunteering can take many forms – whether it’s weekly, monthly, or just once a year, everyone’s contribution makes a difference to Woombye.”
2024 milestones
Among the highlights of the year was the successful hosting of the second annual Woombye Happy Days event, which is set to return in May 2025 with funding secured. The association also facilitated the Meet the Candidates forum, drawing over 120 attendees to the Bowls Club, and helped with the ever-popular Woombye Lantern Parade, which brought the community together in its long-standing tradition of Christmas celebration.
On a smaller scale, WCBA advocated for improvements to Woombye’s accessible toilet facility, supported local events like the ANZAC Day parade, and established operational street banners in Blackall Street now showcasing Christmas decorations.
The group’s advocacy extended to opposing the proposed location of a telecommunications tower and supporting non-profits such as the Woombye Library and the Light Horse Regiment, fostering partnerships across the community.
Looking ahead to 2025
Plans for 2025 include collaborating with Bendigo Bank on local projects, improving the WCBA website, and lobbying for a walking path connecting Woombye to the Big Pineapple. A membership drive is also in the works, aiming to grow the association’s financial supporters of both community and business members.
The WCBA is also preparing a wishlist for newly elected Nicklin MP Marty Hunt and Div 5 Cr Winston Johnston. “We have been consulted by politicians at local and state level on the needs of Woombye,” Mr Frawley said. “The WCBA is viewed as a resource, a central point for the receiving and disseminating of information, and a rational mind for community-discussion.” Please contact the WCBA if you have positive, community suggestions.
Mr Frawley extended heartfelt thanks to local businesses and individuals whose support has been instrumental. “Our community spirit is thriving because of the collective effort of businesses, groups, and residents who share our vision for a better Woombye.”
