WOOMBYE Design Print and Signs is getting smaller – in name only.

The business was taken over in February by Ben Dale and Carlee Ismay, who already owned Development Signs in Brisbane and have decided to rebrand both businesses under the new name, Gigil.

“It’s a Filipino word which means an irresistible call to action,” Ben said.

Ben and Carlee got into the business of signs close to 10 years ago. After 5 years in the army, he was looking for something that would allow him to spend more time with his family when he came across Development Signs for sale online.

It had been run as a hobby business by two town planners who had realised they did not have the time to take it any further, he said.

“I was interested in property. I wanted anything to do with property. I thought this was a way to get involved with developers but it grew quite fast,” Ben said.

The business specialises in providing public notification material such as signage and letters, for developments but can produce a variety of signage.

Ben and Carlee continued to run the business after moving from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast four years ago with their two sons but pounced on Woombye Design Print and Signs when they discovered it was for sale.

They now employ seven people at two production locations, Hillcrest and Woombye. With a graphic designer on board, the business also offers design studio services as well as signage.

Ben said that despite a worldwide growth in online marketing, businesses still wanted printed promotional material.

“I’m surprised at how much printed material still gets distributed,” he said.

“It’s one of those things you think will fade out but a lot of businesses still want brochures and business cards.”
