Yandina mourns loss of beloved community leader, Pat Cordwell

Pat was a respected community leader who left an indelible mark on Yandina through her decades of service and warmth.

The Yandina community is mourning the loss of Amy Patricia "Pat" Cordwell, a beloved local figure and dedicated volunteer, who passed away peacefully on Friday, September 27, surrounded by her family.

Pat, aged 76, was a respected community leader who left an indelible mark on Yandina through her decades of service and warmth.

Pat was born and raised on a Yandina dairy farm owned by her grandparents, who were early settlers in the area. She attended the now-closed Kiamba State School before starting work at a local bakery on Stevens Street. Her community involvement began when her first child started school, where she became the tuckshop convener at Yandina State School and later organised the school’s fundraising efforts.

Over the years, Pat became deeply involved in the community. She was a founding member of the Yandina Scouts and Girl Guides in the 1980s, the Yandina Chamber of Commerce in 1995, and the Yandina Historical Society in 1996. Pat and her husband Garry also took over the family business, Cordwell's Concrete, which continues to be run by their children.

Her family paid tribute to her in a heartfelt message, saying, "A pillar of our community, she touched countless lives with her unwavering love and dedication. Her hardworking character, warmth, and generosity will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her."

Pat was awarded the prestigious Order of Australia Medal in 2014 for her exceptional service to Yandina, including her work with the Yandina Street Fair and Yandina Historic House. Even in her later years, she continued to contribute to the family business, answering phone calls and staying involved.

Her grandson, Martin Cordwell, praised her as "not only a devoted family member but also a cherished friend and mentor to many. Her legacy of service, compassion, and community involvement will live on in our hearts forever."

A celebration of Pat’s life will be announced in the coming days, with family, friends, and community members invited to honour her incredible life and contributions. As her family said, "She will be deeply missed but never forgotten."
