Paralympian Chris Bond OAM endorses Parcell for Mayor
Sunshine Coast resident and Wheelchair Rugby 2x Gold medalist Paralympian Chris Bond has announced his endorsement of Wayne Parcell for Mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council.
“My journey of representing Australia started with a diagnosis of cancer, infection and sepsis back in 2005,” said Mr Bond OAM. “To survive the doctors needed to amputate both my legs, my left hand and most of my right fingers at 19 years of age. My local community of friends and family helped me through my darkest days and understand it is the human connections we make that are the most important things in life.
“Now living with my disability and as a father of two beautiful kids it is key that living on the Sunshine Coast there is better transport and accessibility to our surroundings from the hinterland to the beach for all residents to enjoy what makes the coast so appealing.
“I met Wayne well before his mayoral ambitions many years ago when he was starting the transformation of the old Montville Tennis Club and courts. Wayne has a demonstrated commitment to community and is a consistent advocate for inclusion, particularly of people living with disabilities in sport.
“I can attest that Wayne and his team have been champions for tennis and inclusive community in Montville – my family and I have played tennis with him at Montville and despite using my prosthetic legs gave him a run for his money!
“Wayne's a good sport and a genuine good bloke. I believe he has the passion and commitment to ensure disability access is a key consideration in urban planning, especially in the lead-up to the 2032 Summer Paralympics. Wayne gets things done; he's got my vote for Mayor."
