Palmwoods bowlers contest Club Championships

Ladies Pairs runners-up Judy Walker & Dell Casey, left, and winners Fiona Woodley & Gail Clewett.

Ladies A-Grade runner-up Gail Clewett, left, and champion Julie Johnston.

Several club championships were decided in a busy week at Palmwoods Bowls Club with Julie Johnston named A-Grade Ladies Champion.

Julie defeated Gail Clewett 25-20 in an extremely high-quality final, with some of the best bowls you could witness.

Julie got away to a strong early lead with some very consistent bowling, but Gail began getting her range and looked threatening. The last end saw Julie pick up two points in a very tight contest.

In the lead up matches, Julie defeated Rose in the first round and then Annie Lennon in the semi. Gail overcame Fiona, then accounted for Annie Mac to reach the final. The standard of the ladies bowls this year has been outstanding.

Mixed pairs players Col McKinlay, left, & Geoff Brown, and Rose McKinlay & Sylvia Hollins.

Every player is showing tremendous improvement and the future of Palmwoods ladies is looking very bright.

Julie will contest the Champion of Champions at Kawana this Saturday from 9am.

Geoff Brown wins Men’s title

Men’s A-Grade final runner-up Rick Barnett, right and champion Geoff Brown.

Congratulations to Geoff Brown for taking out the Men’s A-Grade Singles title. Geoff narrowly defeated Rick Barnett. This was another game of the highest standard, but the more experienced Geoff showed his class when the pressure was on despite a great struggle.  He is in great form and thoroughly deserved his victory.  Even so, Rick was right in the game and could still have easily come home with the bacon on the final end.

In other news, Club Men’s Pair winners Col McKinlay & Johnny Moore head to Kawana on July 16 for the Championship finals.

Ladies Pairs champs, Gail Clewett & Fiona Woodley, also contested the Sunshine Coast Championship and although not winning, they will gain a lot of experience from the game.
