Residents invited to help shape Maleny’s new park

Residents are invited to help shape the development of the new Maleny District Park, a multi-stage, multi-year project set to enhance the hinterland town. Community feedback will form the blueprint for the park’s long-term development, pending future budget approvals.

Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston highlighted the integral role of community ideas and feedback in developing the park’s concept plan. “We are developing a concept plan for a new district recreation park that will complement the other recreation offerings in the Maleny Community Precinct,” Cr Johnston said.

Cr Johnston emphasised the reasons Maleny was cherished, such as its vibrant town centre, proximity to walking trails and nature, and its strong, active community. The new district park aims to provide a space for the community to enjoy the outdoors together.

“In order to build the ideal park for the Maleny community, we want to understand how you would like to use the park, what you would like to see included, your priorities for the park, and the look and feel you want for the park design.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how our community will help shape this new district park and how it will support local businesses by encouraging visitors to explore the township.

“This is a great opportunity to help shape the future of the Maleny District Park as we connect and engage with our communities to build a better future for everyone.”

Residents can share their ideas about the park’s design and theme from July 15 to August 12, 2024.

They can participate by completing an online survey and joining the Maleny District Park Fund-It Activity on the Council’s website. Additionally, the design team will be available to meet in person on July 27 in Maple Street.

Draft Concept Plan

The community’s input will guide the draft concept plan and the proposed future staged development of the park. Later this year, residents will be invited to review the draft concept plan and provide feedback.

The project is part of the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan, endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Council in 2010. The plan addresses the future development of former farmland for recreation purposes. Changes to the plan, influenced by community input, have shaped the current layout of the precinct.

Currently, $900,000 is allocated for the first stage of the park’s design and implementation in the Council’s 10-year capital works program. This funding is subject to Council endorsement each financial year.
