Sellout College event marks 20 years of dance excellence

Nambour State College’s sell-out dance event celebrates 20 years of artistic excellence

Nambour State College’s annual dance spectacular, Extravadance, has again proven to be a resounding success. The June 5 and 6 event performed to sell-out crowds on both nights showcasing the talents of 122 students from years 3 to 12. College alumni who have joined the professional dance industry also participated in the performances. Held at Hungerford Hall, it featured a variety of dance styles, including hip hop, contemporary, jazz, musical theatre, Bollywood, traditional cultural dances and tap.

Organised by the Cert III in Dance class and led by specialist teachers Emilia McKay and Sarah Stanke alongside Head of the Arts Liz Clout, the performance draws hundreds of audience members each year.

“My favourite thing about Extravadance is the sense of community it brings to all involved,” said Specialist Dance teacher Emilia McKay. “Whether it’s the participation from principals, teachers, local dance studios, primary performances, alumni performances, or our amazingly talented students, we all come together here in the Hungerford Hall to share, embrace, and celebrate our love of dance as a community.”

Student organizer Brooke Norris said Extravadance was the most important event of the year. “Everyone looks forward to it. Shy people get to put themselves out of their comfort zone and express themselves.”

Mirabella Otasui said everyone came together and learned new things to perform for the public. “It’s a good environment. I always look forward to dance. At school, it’s my favourite subject. I feel so supported by everyone.”
