Innovative students to replicate Nambour Showgrounds in Lego

Setting up the Show will be child’s play this year as schools across the Coast are inspired by Suncoast Christian College students to rebuild aspects of the annual event. Grade 3 College students, from left, Jacob, Joshua, Elio, Stella and Olivia get a head start on the build with Adam King and Jenny McKay.

Suncoast Christian College is taking the lead in this year’s Lego Section at the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show.

“They’re going to rebuild the Show in Lego,” said Show Patron Jenny Mckay.

“Suncoast Christian College will work with schools across the Coast to achieve this huge task.

“The finished Lego Showgrounds will be on display under the Pavilion at the Nambour Showgrounds in this year’s big Lego Section.”

Suncoast Christian College, P-12 Instructional Designer, Adam King is coordinating the effort and says kids were excited and looking forward to the task ahead.

“The Showgrounds map will measure 3.6m (long) x 2.3m (wide),” he said. “So, it’s a big area to fill. We shall invite schools to nominate what they would like to build in Lego to replicate the Show attractions: whether it be a rollercoaster, sideshow alley, show bag stall, or maybe a little coffee shop. The contribution will be positioned on the large collaborative map.”

Jenny said the Showgrounds project would be the centerpiece display and will be surrounded by the regular Lego Section entries submitted by people of all ages in Duplo, Lego, and Technic.

The Showgrounds display will also incorporate robotics so that machinery like the Ferris-Wheel will be turning.

“We will award first, second, third prizes, for the still contributions that feature on 16 x 16 stud plates,” said Adam. “And then there’ll be a first place for a moving contribution, such as a rollercoaster or rocking ship. They need to be built on a 32 x 32 stud plate. Contributions must be free form and be original works. No instructions.”

“That’s really important because that encourages the creativity of the exercise,” said Jenny.
