Four of six Nambour rugby teams make grand finals

Nambour Senior Women’s team are in to next week’s Sunshine Coast Rugby Union Grand Final against Noosa following a dominant and promising 41-7 win against Caloundra on Saturday.

They will join three other elligible Nambour teams vying for premiership honours.

In an outstanding effort for the hinterland club, four of Nambour’s six eligible teams qualified for grand finals this weekend.

The Senior Men will play Gympie on Friday at Nambour after beating Brothers 10-5 last week. The Under 12 Boys and Under 17 Girls will play at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Saturday following big wins in their respective semi-finals against Saints and Gympie. The Senior Women will play at University on Sunday.

“The defence was fantastic today,” said Senior Women’s Coach Luke Zeremis of Saturday’s match.

“We had a first time fly-half today. We bounced back from last week. Geez they did a good job.

“If we keep teams out of our 22 they’ll be very hard-pressed to score,” he said.

“If we play like that against Noosa and stick to our strengths we’ll do all right. I’m so proud of the girls.

“Our eldest player in the backline today was only 18 years old, but they look so composed. We love to play a ball-in-hand, youthful, exciting brand of rugby.

“But Noosa has excellent defence so it’s not going to be easy next week.”

Fullback Georgia flood was confident her team could bounce back from last week’s 12-nil semi final loss to the Dolphins (Nambour’s first loss of the season) and turn the tables in the game that counts.

“Last week we did a lot of pressure passing,” she said. “So if we slow down and stay composed, I think we’ll do all right.”

Georgia was happy with Saturday’s effort and said it gave them useful momentum for the GF.

“We did what we wanted to do, which was run them around and tire them.”

Meanwhile, Nambour’s last men’s premiership came in 2011 when the Colts won an epic final at Sunshine Coast Stadium. Remarkably, three players from the 2011 side still represent the club today: Isaac Finch, Nicholas Collingwood and Trent Cook.
