Nurse continues mission to provide water for women & children in Kenyan homeland

Driven by a passion to improve the lives of women and children in her hometown of Marimanti, Kenya, Nambour community nurse Lillian Muchiri is raising funds for a critical clean water project. As the founder of Karibu Women’s & Children’s Home Limited, Lillian’s charity aims to create a safe haven for those fleeing violence and to foster educational opportunities for young girls.

“We have completed the first stage of the project by building an underground water cement tank that will store approximately 15,000 litres,” Lillian explained. “The next stage is the borehole construction that will ensure clean water is sourced, pumped, and stored for easy access. I was quoted $20,000 to achieve the borehole as the next stage. We will get the water pumped into the tank. Thank goodness we managed to find water at a very deep 180m underground.”

Despite the ongoing cost-of-living pressures, Lillian remains hopeful. “I know things are really tight for people at the moment, but we need to revisit this cause and have another round of fundraising. I’m hoping to get a company to sponsor the project because it’s hard asking individuals to donate during these tough times.”

Lillian emphasised the importance of the project: “This is not just about water. It’s also about spreading the awareness in supporting girls in my village to achieve secondary education rather than being married off at a young age for exploitation and dowry. The clean water project will help save lives from communicable diseases and save women from travelling for miles to access water from a contaminated creek that dries when the rains stop.

Donations are eligible for tax claims. “Any donation, big or small, is well received and appreciated towards changing someone’s life,” Lillian said.
