It is a game of strategy, skill and it can be great fun. It’s a bit like playing snooker with a mallet on a tennis court. It’s croquet! And it’s a game requiring tactical nous and a wide range of special skills.

Nambour Croquet Club is looking for new players. Located next to the Nambour Bowls Club the club has tutors who can show you the elements of the game. A reasonable fitness level is required.

Played on flat, short grass games last 30 to 45 minutes.  The playing field boundaries are marked off by stakes. Other equipment includes mallets, balls and wickets—the hoops through which the balls are hit. It’s fun, and challenging, especially considering the gap between the outside of the ball and the inside of the hoop is only about a sixteenth of an inch!

“We have players aged from 10 ( juniors who play Friday afternoons) to seniors,” said Spokesperson Patrick Farrell. “One lady member aged 92 is still a keen player. Playing will improve fitness and coordination. It’s played out in the open air, provides exercise, helps coordination and is great fun.”

Play at Nambour is three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9am till noon. Morning tea is provided.

“You can have four trial games free of charge,” said Patrick. “You will be given a warm welcome to a very friendly club.”

For further information contact Patrick on 5472 7287 or email berpat@bigpond.com.

Tell us about your club. Email you pic and story about your club and how to play to editor@sunshinevalleygazette.com.au and we’ll print it in the paper so you can attract more members.
