Grant supports men’s shed fit-out and mental health

The Maleny and District Men’s Shed will soon be able to complete the fit out of their second  Shed thanks to a Queensland Country Bank “Good for Good Community Grant”. 

President Kevin Trevarthen said the $3886 would be put towards the fit out of their secondary shed and enable the organisation to increase the activities on offer to the local community.

“The Maleny Men’s Shed offers men, many of whom are retired or unemployed, a place to come and work on their own or community projects; or men may choose to just enjoy the companionship of others,” said Mr Trevarthen.

“Our current facility is at capacity and moreover is dedicated to woodwork and metal work so we cannot offer other activities which have been requested.

“We also do not have a dedicated lunchroom and kitchen for smokos and lunches, or disabled toilets, or a space to provide training and presentations on important topics such as men’s health, digital literacy.

“The grant provides significant financial assistance towards the completion of the new shed, allowing us to expand our activities and provide an additional asset to the Maleny community.”

Mr Trevarthen said the grant funding meant they’ve been able to redirect their own funds back into supporting the community.

“We have already had to redirect substantial funds to costs associated with an unanticipated Town Planning Development Application, and without the grant, would have been required to redirect even more funds to complete and certify the project,” said Mr Trevarthen.

“We were very pleased to see the Queensland Country Bank supporting local not-for-profit organisations, particularly as it has relatively recently taken over the local community-based credit union.”

Queensland Country Bank Maleny Branch Manager Jodie Nolan said the second shed would help ensure the organisation could continue its important work.  “One of the advantages of being a member-owned bank is that we can give profits back to the community in the form of grants such as this one,” said Ms Nolan. 

“The Men’s Shed is a valuable part of the Maleny community and has been instrumental in promoting physical and mental health amongst men.”
