What Nicklin wants: Hunt vows to deliver community-driven vision

Q&A with Nicklin MP Marty Hunt

Question. What are your key goals for the hinterland in 2025?

My key goals are to ensure our election commitments are met. Delivering on the community safety promises we made to the people of Nambour with live feed CCTV to Nambour Police Station and a permanent police beat shop front in the CBD, road and intersection improvements in Palmwoods and Woombye, along with our community and sporting group commitments such as the Every Day Foundation Community Supermarket, Palmwoods Warriors Football Club and Woombye State School entrance.

Q. What do you see as the biggest challenges for the hinterland in coming years?

One of the major challenges is that we have been neglected for so long, which has left us striving to catch up to address the gaps. Development without proper infrastructure, funding shortfalls in our schools, years of delays in our hospital redevelopment and other much-needed projects. It is up to me as your local representative to fight for our fair share.  Last time I was the local member I was in opposition and requests for funding often fell on deaf ears. This time, as your Member who is in Government, I am optimistic about the commitments made to our area and will continue to strongly advocate for the priorities in Nicklin.

Q. What was the most important lesson you learned in 2024?

I learned that generally a lot of people are doing it pretty tough. I spoke to so many residents and businesses who were just scraping by hoping for better times ahead. I learned that businesses need Governments to get out of their way so they can invest and succeed, but be there when they need them. I see homelessness in our area worse than it has ever been. However, I’ve also learned that the best solutions often come from within our communities. As representatives, it’s our responsibility to listen, act, and provide the support needed to address these issues effectively.

Q. What else would you like to say to people in the hinterland regarding your goals/vision?

My goals and vision should match the community’s goals and vision for the area.  It’s not about what I want, but about what the community wants and needs.  It is about listening and acting and that’s the type of Member I intend to be.  The commitments we have made so far reflect that, they came from extensive door knocking and community consultation through the election period and feedback about what is important to residents. I would encourage everyone to get involved by coming and seeing me at my regular Conversation Stations throughout the electorate, email your ideas into the office or engage with me on social media. I will be attending regular meetings of community organisations, Chambers of Commerce, schools and other opportunities to engage with our community, because it is important that I am your Nicklin representative in Brisbane, not your Brisbane representative in Nicklin.
