Maleny Men’s Shed sparks creative endeavours
Club of the Week
The Maleny and District Men’s Shed has over 50 members and meets Tuesdays and Fridays from 8am to midday.
A rising number of retirees in the region has seen increasing demand for the important benefits that the Men’s Shed movement provides.
These benefits include creating opportunities to learn new skills, building a social network and passing time meaningfully in the company of mates, according to Maleny and District Men’s Shed Secretary Lindsay Hay.
“Men’s Sheds provide a collegiate network of support, advice, and fellowship for men of all ages around their mental and physical health, aspects of wellbeing that men are sometimes reluctant to address,” he said.
The Maleny and District Men’s Shed, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2021 and has over 50 members, will soon commence construction of a second facility, a shed donated by the Australian Defence Force and previously used in Vietnam, and an extension to their parking lot to include disabled parking.
“This new resource will allow the expansion of the Men’s Shed services into alternative clean activities such as leatherwork, lead lighting, cards, computers etc, as well as a breakout space for meals and information sessions,” Mr Hay said.
“These cannot be practically conducted in the current shed which is dedicated to wood and metal work. Moreover, the existing shed has reached effective capacity.”
The Maleny Mens Shed operates on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8am to midday.
Men of all ages, backgrounds and interests are welcome. Activities include woodworking, metalworking and blacksmithing. One of the popular activities is the making of “Condamine cow bells” which was introduced by the late member, Kevin Howell. Maleny Mens Shed is a place for Maleny men to get together, enjoy some hands-on activities, make new friends and talk about “men’s business”.
You don’t need any actual skills to join the Maleny Mens Shed, other than a need to have a guilt-free social activity in the company of other similar minded male persons.
