Lifetime concretor promises best quality results

Born and raised on the Sunshine Coast, Bevan Meiers of Cheap as Chips Concreting has been concreting since 1988.

“I pretty much started in the trade straight out of school, and apart from taking a few years off in between, it is what I have done all my life,” he said.

Bevan has worked in Brisbane, on the Sunshine Coast and in Mackay, and has picked up a few tricks in that time to ensure that his workmanship stands the test of time.

“Probably the most important thing about concreting is using good quality products, and not cutting corners,” Bevan said.

“There is a reason why there is an Australian standard thickness, which is 100mm and that is because being a natural product, concrete is inclined to crack,” he said.

“To minimise the risk of cracking it is really important not to install a thinner layer than this. I know that some operators apply a 75mm layer and this is just not going to give as good a result.”

Bevan also uses a high quality concrete to ensure a better and harder wearing result. “I use Cordwells 25mpa concrete, which is a Sunshine Coast product that meets a range of industry and environmental standards,” he said. “It is a stronger mix and the end finish is exceptional.”

While the materials are more expensive for Bevan to use, he does not pass this cost on to his clients. “The different types of jobs I do include driveways, pathways, patios and shed slabs,” said Bevan. “I can do plain, coloured, stencilled, stamped and exposed concrete. It really depends on what my customers want. It is my choice to use a better quality, more expensive product, so I don’t feel right about passing that cost on,” he said.

“At the end of the day, I treat every job as though it was on my own property, and I am very fussy. If it is not up to scratch for me, it won’t be right for my customers.”
