Leigh Phelan, Kate Ganley, Jeanette Gardner and Fiona Sharpe belong to Chay’s Group, a Nambour Suicide Prevention Group started three years ago which usually meets at C-Square. “We’ve been offering free support, tea, coffee, bickies and home made snacks and slices to anyone who needs a chat,” said Leigh Phelan. “We’re also offering a free monthly barbecue on Wednesday at Quota Park for vulnerable people. Our income comes from collecting 10c bottles, so I would ask the community to please save them for us. We can provide a bin if you have some patrons that can throw them in our bin for collection. We’re non-religious in any way.” The 12-member group is very informal with no official status but does have access to the services of local health and mental health professionals.
