Local Gymnasts set to represent area on international stage

Three senior gymnasts from a local not-for-profit gymnastics club are preparing to compete at the prestigious Lion City Classic 2025 in Singapore. The April 25 to 27 event will be the first international competition for Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Academy’s Addison Brown, 14, and Keely Willison, 15, while Ayesha Youlten, 13, brings valuable experience, having previously competed in Europe.

“The girls have a very strong work ethic and a positive attitude, and are admired by younger gymnasts,” said Academy Secretary Jo Abdou. “They are wonderful role models for the girls.”

However, Jo said preparing for the competition came with unique challenges as Australian and Singaporean gymnastics levels have different rules and requirements.

“The girls have to modify their routines to meet Singapore’s standards,” Jo said. “This requires a quick transition between routines, as they will compete in Australia before flying out and must revert to their Australian routines shortly after returning for another competition.”

The team will be accompanied by Coach Rimma Lazarus, head coach at Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Academy, which is based in Woombye. “With a lifetime of experience as a gymnast and coach, Rimma has worked with athletes worldwide, bringing a wealth of knowledge to the team,” said Jo.  “Under her guidance, the girls will be in the best hands as they take on this international challenge.”

To help fund their journey, the Academy is hosting a Maroochydore Bunnings BBQ fundraiser on Saturday April 12.

The community is encouraged to show their support and help these talented gymnasts represent their club and the Sunshine Coast.

Accepting new enrolments.

The gym offers gymnastics and trampoline classes for all ages and skill levels in a fun and supportive environment. “We also run a casual adults’ class every Tuesday night—perfect for those looking to stay active and learn new skills,” said Jo.
