Blues Super Saturday of footy looms with GF spots up for grabs
The stage is set for a huge Saturday of Footy for Hinterland Blues Australian Football Club this Saturday (August 27) with Seniors and Reserves playing in home finals at Property Lane Oval, Jubilee Drive Palmwoods.
Reserves will play at 11.45am at the ground, newly named in honour of ground rights sponsors Property Lane. They will contest a cut-throat Semi-Final against Kenmore Bears for the right to play in a Preliminary Final the following week.
This follows a resounding 102-point victory over Moorooka Roosters in the elimination final (3 v 6) on Saturday (17.13.115 - 2.1.13).
Seniors to play Alexandra Hills
Then the Seniors will play Alexandra Hills Bombers at 2pm for the right to go straight through to the Grand Final a fortnight later.
Both sides will be well rested after a weeks break and it shapes as a fast and physical contest.
“This is what our squad have been working so diligently toward for 10 months and they are determined to make it count,” a club spokesman said. “Get down and cheer them on.”
The Ladies team will travel to Pine River to play second-placed Swans who they beat in sensational fashion only a couple of weeks ago to ignite their finals charge. Game time will be 4.45pm and the victor will progress to the Grand Final the following week.
Ladies surge continues with victory
The Hinterland Blues Ladies team produced possibly the best victory of their six-year history when they travelled to Jindalee on Saturday for an elimination final following two great weeks against the top two teams.
After struggling to cope early, with a couple of very fast Jindalee players on the outside, the Blues found themselves playing catch-up for the entire contest but just refused to stop working.
It was a seven-point deficit at half time that blew out to near 20 points through the third quarter. Inaccurate kicking cost Jindalee dearly and the Blues ladies just kept chipping away through pure determination.
It was a tense final 5 minutes with sides locked at 50 points apiece and officials pulling out rules books to check what would happen in the event of a draw.
With Jindalee tiring the Blues managed to lock the ball in the Jaguars forward 50 and gain multiple opportunities to score only to be denied again and again.
Victory was only secured right at the death as the siren went a fraction of a second after a snap shot on goal was launched from 50 metres and it bounced through for a point and a Blues win.
