A PALMWOODS beauty salon has made the final for a national industry award.

HB Beauty is a contender for the Australian Beauty Industry Awards Queensland salon/spa/clinic of the year in the four treatment rooms or less category.

The salon is owned by Helena Bergman, who has been working in the beauty industry for more than 25 years.

Helena set her sights on an award win last year and was excited to learn that judges had chosen the salon as a finalist.

She will learn if the salon has been successful when the award winners are announced at a gala ceremony in Sydney on 28 August but is happy just to have made the finals.

“I’m a winner already. I’ll find out there that we’ve got the award, that’s great but I’m a winner already,” she said.

“We have a lot of support from the local community. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without them because they are the reason I’m there. I’m really grateful for the customers that support us.”

Helena began working in the beauty industry at 17 and said it had alwas been her passion.

“I used to teach beauty. I’ve worked in salons. I’ve worked overseas and on Hamilton Island. It’s what I’ve always loved doing,” she said.

Originally from Eudlo, Helena realised the opportunity to open her own salon after settling down to family life at Palmwoods.

“It started as home-based business when the kids were little. I’ve been in the shop about five years,” she said.

The salon, which now employs two staff in addition to Helena, offers skin treatments as well as beauty services such as waxing.

Helena has developed an HB skincare range of about 12 products and an e-book on how to use the gua sha massage facial massage tool.

She believes these initiatives, plus a focus on seasonal promotion, are likely to have impressed the judges so far and she hopes they will set the salon apart from other salons in in the final.
