Genealogy members gather for anniversary
Genealogy Sunshine Coast marked a decade of community achievement last Saturday, celebrating the 10th anniversary of its community learning hub in Nambour.
The learning hub, officially opened in 2015, was made possible through tireless fundraising, donations, and dedicated volunteers who rallied together despite significant challenges, including heavy rains and escalating building costs.
Former President Lynne Callaghan, who oversaw the original project, recalled the community effort in her address on the day.
“Our building is a testament to what a small but dedicated society can accomplish with limited funds, a strong spirit of recycling, and remarkable generosity,” Ms Callaghan said.
“The generosity of our members was truly remarkable. An additional $40,000 was raised through donations and creative fundraising efforts. Some of the more innovative methods included sponsoring building materials-members could ‘buy’ a sheet of gyprock, a light fixture, or a tin of paint.”
The ever-popular bring-and-buy stalls played a crucial role, with one dedicated member even turning mulberries from a nearby tree into jam to sell.
“She didn’t drive, so we can only imagine her catching buses with bags of mulberries in tow when friends weren’t available! She even climbed the tree to pick them when no one was watching!”
Saturday’s attendees enjoyed a photo display and stories of the early days, highlighting the commitment of locals whose combined effort helped realise the vision.
