Take a swing! Nambour Crushers to host Fred Brophy Boxing Troupe

Nambour Crushers Rugby League Club is hosting the legendary Fred Brophy and his boxing troupe on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 October at Crusher Park.

Fred Brophy is a fourth-generation showman who has been boxing since he was four years old when his father and uncle toured their boxing tents.

The troupe travel the length and breadth of country Australia and are regulars at the Birdsville Races and Mount Isa Rodeo.

Crushers Secretary Wendy Turner said she was excited to be bringing the troupe to Nambour where, when the drum starts banging and the bells start ringing, Fred will put out the call to interested local challengers to step inside the ring and have a go.

“A few of our members travelled to Gympie Devils Football Club on Saturday night to do a reconnaissance of what to expect at the end of the month,” Wendy said. “I didn’t know how I’d react to it but I loved it.

“What we witnessed was amazing – a huge, loud and enthusiastic crowd gathered to cheer on the locals who stepped up to put on the gloves. Even two of the canteen ladies volunteered to take on Fred’s female fighter Natalie – so brave! We are so excited as a club to have Fred and his team come to Crushers. It will be an unforgettable experience for those that attend.”

Crushers have also organised a ‘Come and Chat to Fred’ event on Thursday 28 October at the Clubhouse. It will be a chance to hear some of the colourful stories of Fred’s travels and the characters he has come across.

Local boxer Darren Obah, who represented Australia in the 1988 Olympics, will also be there to support the Crusher fundraiser.

Entry for Friday and Saturday is $40 each night. Tickets can be purchased through the  Nambour Rugby League Club or call the club mobile - 0436 381 404. Further details will be on their Facebook page soon, if not already.

Have you got what it takes to challenge Fred’s fighters, above?  They’re coming to Nambour this month.
