Estia’s model railway layout brings back fond memories

A train layout designed and built by the Sunshine Coast Model Railway Club Men’s Shed (SCMRCMS) has become an integral part of daily life for residents at Estia Lifestyle Nambour.

SCMRCMS was approached by Dementia Support Australia to build the layout for use as diversional therapy for Estia’s dementia residents, many of whom have railway backgrounds.

But the 2500x1200m layout – themed around Nambour with cane fields, cane train, sugar mill, local shops and a golf course – has become a hit with everyone, and even led to the formation of a men’s club.

Estia Health Nambour spokesperson Wendy May said the layout had proved to be an extremely useful therapy tool not only for the “railway” residents, but other residents have wanted to be involved as well. 

“We are now configuring our meeting area, so this layout is the focal point and we’re adding Nambour historical photos to the surrounds,” she said.

“The residents love to talk about their experiences & readily make suggestions for additions to the layout. 

“This will bring much joy, companionship and reminiscing opportunities for our residents for years to come.”

Wendy said particular mention must go to SCMRCMS volunteer Steve Blackbourn who has been volunteering every Friday morning, to clean the tracks, maintain the trains and be a general ‘Great Mate’ to residents.

“With the help of Steve, every Friday morning our new ‘Men’s Group’ have morning tea with Steve around the train set. 

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our men to form friendships and feel connected to each other and the community.”

Wendy said the model railway layout project was inspired by one of the residents who used to be a train driver.  “Reuben is very happy to sit by the model railway layout and talk about what he used to do.

“We also have Hazel Grundy who was the publican of the Club Hotel for 20 years, Allan Lanham whose father began Lanham’s Timber & Hardware later to become Lanham’s Mitre 10 and Sunshine Mitre 10.

“This model railway layout is such a valuable thing for our home. Residents will be able to learn about the history of Nambour, the reminiscing roads we can walk along together will be so wonderful.

“Connections to community are so valuable, through this project we have been able to join forces with many local businesses, organisations and wonderful people who have been happy to support our Lifestyle program to better engage our residents and provide opportunities for residents to gather and form friendships and bonds.” 

The completed layout has been operational for the past month and was officially opened on July 14 by Nicklin MP Rob Skelton and Caloundra MP Jason Hunt.
