Bowls success: Club Yandina chosen to host Pennant Finals
In a boon for hinterland bowls, Club Yandina has been chosen to host the Division 3 & 8 Pennant Finals for the Sunshine Coast District Men’s Bowls Association (SCDMBA) on 17 September.
Club Chairman Leon Granzien was grateful the SCDMBA had entrusted his club with the event.
“I’ve asked around and no-one can remember Club Yandina hosting a SCDMBA Pennant Final,” he said.
“The SCDMBA has been very supportive of hinterland clubs over recent years, and we must thank them for giving us the opportunity. In the past, Pennant finals have been played at the larger clubs on the coastal strip.
“It’s great to see them wanting to bring some of these bigger events to the hinterland so we can showcase how good we are. We have great facilities, two great greens and great volunteers.
“I think it’s also a nice change for visiting bowlers. Our club still has a homely, country feel and it makes a nice change to the bigger clubs. We’re are also pokie-free and everything is done by volunteers so there’s a different atmosphere I guess.
“Being a smaller club, these types of events help us to remain sustainable, through catering and bar sales.”
Leon said Yandina had men’s teams playing in Divisions 5 and 8, and there was an outside chance the Division 8 team could play in the Pennant Final in front of a home crowd. “That would be the icing of the cake,” he said.
Sunshine Coast District Men’s Bowls Association (SCDMBA) Division 3 & 8 Pennant Finals take place on 17 September from about 1pm at Club Yandina.
