Lucky escape as vehicle smashes into Royal George

The vehicle came off second best.

Emergency services responded to an incident where a vehicle crashed into the Royal George Hotel on the corner of Currie St and Howard St Nambour last Thursday.

A spokesperson from Queensland Police said the driver was a male in his 60s. Police and ambulance crews were called around 9am. The driver, who was the only occupant of the car, sustained minor scratches but was in a stable condition after an evaluation from paramedics.

A witness said the driver was travelling towards the Royal George from Howard Street when he went through the intersection “at a reasonable pace”.

“He went straight through the lights,” the shopkeeper said. “It was so loud I thought that three cars must have been involved. Police and ambulance were here within about 10 minutes.

“If it was two seconds later he would have cleaned someone up, because the Currie Street lights had just turned green as he went though. A lady in a car that was stopped at the lights said she had just touched the accelerator as he came through because her lights had turned green. Judging by the damage to his car he must have been going at a reasonable speed. It was lucky he didn’t hit a pedestrian.”
