Art restorer joins team at Yandina Art & Framing

Sophie Theobald-Clark has a passion for art conservation and has started at Yandina Art & Framing.

There is a new face at Yandina Art & Framing, with Sophie Theobald-Clark joining the team at the end of June.

“We are thrilled to have someone with Sophie’s education and experience joining our team,” said Director, Bill Gissane. “It has turned out to be a fantastic exchange of skills.”

Sophie and her husband and children moved to the area initially to be closer to extended family.

Sophie has a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in History & Art History at the University of Queensland, and went on to obtain an Honours in Art History.

“Finding the job at Yandina Art and Framing turned out to be one of those fortuitous experiences,” Sophie said. “We were visiting the town and called into the shop to look at the artwork. I got chatting with the girls, who suggested I stay in touch. I’m very glad I did because it is a wonderful place to work.”

Sophie has a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in History & Art History at the University of Queensland, and went on to obtain an Honours in Art History. “From that point, I was incredibly fortunate to complete an internship at the Queensland Art Gallery, under the direction of the incredibly well-respected and experienced Head of Conservation, John Hook. I managed to gain this experience just before John retired. In fact, he was semi-retired when we initially met,” she said.

Sophie also worked with Master Framer, Paul Curson, at the Museum of Brisbane.

“I think these experiences gave me a real passion for art conservation and I pursued this by enrolling in a two year Masters of Cultural Material Conservation course in Melbourne, which I completed in 2013,” she said.

“Many of my peers went on to positions in North America and Europe, but at that point, starting a family was my priority. You could say babies got in the way!” she laughed.

Sophie is applying her skills in her new position and is also having a fast tracked education in framing. “It all goes hand in hand and I am enjoying it very much,” said Sophie. “I am fortunate to be working with such a nice bunch of people.”
