Aqua aerobics brings hope through partner program with Coast Dementia Network

The Nambour Aquatic Centre, in collaboration with the Sunshine Coast Dementia Network, is running an innovative weekly session – the Dementia Network Partnership Aqua program – to support individuals with dementia, Parkinson’s, and other brain-related disorders, as well as their carers.

Held every Monday at 10am in the centre’s fully accessible 25m indoor pool at 31 Petrie Park Road, Nambour, the session is affordably priced at $10. The program offers an opportunity to engage in gentle water-based exercise that improves physical fitness and cognitive function. The warm water eases joint pain, increases range of motion, and strengthens core muscles while fostering a supportive, social environment.

Regular attendees are already reaping the benefits. “I’ve noticed a real improvement in my balance since joining,” said Lynette, a frequent participant. “It helps prevent falls, and I love the chance to float and relax afterward.” Others, including those living with Parkinson’s and dementia, find that the sessions not only boost physical health but also help reduce feelings of isolation.

Nambour Aquatic Centre Manager Kate Baker, who is passionate about the program, explained: “I was approached by a lady who wanted to provide an opportunity for people with dementia and brain-related disorders to gather, exercise, have fun and connect with others facing similar challenges. Having a parent with Parkinson’s myself, I see the huge benefit this has made to my Dad’s life – a safe and supported place to exercise and form meaningful relationships outside of home. We believe we are a one-of-a-kind program, run by and for the local community.”

• For further information or to enrol in the session, contact the Nambour Aquatic Centre on 5476 0455 or email  nambour@belgravialeisure.com.au. Join the session, connect with others, and discover how a simple class can bring hope and a better quality of life to our community.
