Yandina-Eumundi RSL honours the fallen on Remembrance Day

The Yandina-Eumundi RSL Sub Branch was honoured to work with the community to Remember to Remember with a minute’s silence at 11am on Wednesday 11 November.

The traditional Remembrance Day Ceremony at the cenotaph was replaced by a small Commemorative Service at the historic sub-branch hall due to COVID-19 restrictions. The service was live-streamed so that those who couldn’t attend could still be part of this traditional local service.

Yandina-Eumundi RSL Sub Branch President Tracey Gilmartin said it was wonderful to see local residents united in spirit on this special day.

“Remembrance Day means different things to each of us, and we are humbled that so many in our local community wish to honour those who have served and sacrificed,” Ms Gilmartin said.

“In much the same way as we gathered in spirit for ANZAC Day, people were able to Remember to Remember in a similar COVID-safe way this Remembrance Day.”

Ms Gilmartin said the local primary school was connected to the service to take part in the commemoration. The Yandina Chamber of encouraged businesses to connect virtually as a mark of respect.

The Eumundi Markets promoted the streaming of the service during their market day and sold poppies to help raise funds for the Sub Branch.

There were also veterans and their families that were away, interstate and in hospital that were able to connect to the service due to the sub-branch embracing technology to ensure these important traditions live strongly in the community.

“We are the smallest RSL on the Coast,” Ms Gilmartin said. “We are doing what we can to honour the past and remain relevant and useful for veterans and families of all ages.”

Andy Fermo was keynote speaker at the ceremony.
